One technique, one weed at a time !
It was a beautiful morning. Temperatures in the low 70s. Sun had been up no more than an hour. Not a mosquito in sight. Empty coffee cup on the deck. Time to stretch and get moving for the day. But first a slow stroll around the flower beds. Time to weed.
Quick check on the kids and they were in their jammies building a large castle with their wooden blocks on the back door step. Mock battles, princesses rescued, knights in shiny armour. They were OK.
Picking a section to start, I enjoyed every minute pulling out weeds from around each flower. Stepping back, done, I noticed a weed I had missed. How did that happen? Pulled it out, stepped back again and another weed jumped out at me.
By this time, I’m muttering under my breath “This is just like online marketing, you learn something, think you’ve got it aced, step back and realize there’s something else you have to do or learn.”
Wait, what did I just say? Seeing the one weed that you missed, after you think you’re finished is just like internet marketing?
Darn, I’m right.
Cleaning up a flower bed is just like internet marketing. You diligently pull or dig up each weed, remove it and when it’s clean (in your opinion), you step back, observe what you’ve done and there it is. Something you’ve missed. One little weed keeps that flower bed from looking perfect.
Online, you learn and implement something, There are steps you have to take to get it up and running. You do each step, step back and observe what you’ve done and realize there is just one little piece that a.) you forgot or b.) you didn’t know about until you went to check it or c,) you notice someone else has added a little tweek that would make it look better, or function better or automate the whole process.
You have to step back into the flower bed and get that one little weed taken care of.
Or maybe it’s two that you missed. One was quite big, were you blind?
Weeding, just like online marketing, is an ongoing process. Always learning one more thing.
And that’s cool. Pulling weeds on a beautiful morning is awesome. So is the sense of accomplishment when you learn and implement one new thing every day or week.
Both get your life in order. Both are fulfilling. Both give you the most amazing results when you get the work done.
Make today and awesome day and get at least one weed pulled. Every little thing you do is one step closer to a beautiful garden.

I see your point, Joyce – marketing IS a never-ending process. That’s the core of our business.

I agree. There is always something more we need to learn and do.
Very cool analogy Joyce. I love it. Learning and weeding are never done… that’s the fun part isn’t it? We constantly improve.
That is the fun part isn’t it? And the rewarding, challenging and stimulating aspect of what our industry can offer us.
I enjoy reading your post…you’re a GREAT storyteller!!! Phenomenal way to take your gardening experience & relate it to the industry. Its true, we always seem to find that one thing (or multiple things) that need fixin’…but with consistency, you can shape & mold that thing towards perfection! Nice post Joyce!
Thanks Char. There are times I actually have a weed free flower bed but it’s because I’ve done exactly what you’ve said. Consistency, each day, little by little and it comes together !
Love this post! I like how you can use weeds and take it in such different directions…I did a post about weeds in a blog I was doing one time, and it was all about how I am truly present when I am gardening…the monkey mind automatically disappears and I am simply one with my surroundings. That’s what I love about working from home. I can take a break, go down by the pond, watch the ducks, Canadian geese, blue herons, whatever is out there…and come back refreshed after a ten minute break and re-energized with a new perspective on a particular internet issue! Thanks for feeding me with this post and creative fertile ground!
There is nothing like stepping outside and just enjoying being alive. Every once and awhile the deer take a shortcut and they will stand within 20 feet of me in all their majesty and like you my soul is refreshed. Thanks Dotti.
Great post Joyce – I guess that’s why we call it ‘life long learning’
That’s what we need to do, is to realize that learning is never done, but sometimes it would be nice to say “Yes, I’ve done it.” LOL
Well I tend to say YES!! and now for the next step… will that do??
Most definitely. Every step is another step forward.
Hey Joyce, that’s what it’s all about. It’s all a part of your growth in your business. Thanks for sharing!!

I love the analogy Joyce
Pulling one weed at a time is like taking just one small step.
Soon those steps add up and you get to your destination.

And the learning curve is never over. That’s kind of exciting.
